Founded in 1999 by Troy Locke and Jamie Stultz, the Portland company has grown in size, expanded in product offerings, and created a recurring revenue stream and a loyal customer base.

Melissa Smith
Melissa Smith joined WEX in 1997. After progressively gaining greater responsibilities and participating in WEX’s dramatic growth, she rose to her current position as leader of the global corporate payments company. Melissa is passionate about growing WEX to create challenging and rewarding careers where employees are able to develop, contribute and advance within the company.

A finance expert by training, she previously played a pivotal role as WEX’s chief financial officer, leading the company through a highly successful initial public offering and focusing on its growth as a public company. Her record of execution, continuous improvement, and increased responsibilities for WEX’s business operations led to her appointment as president of the Americas, and ultimately as president and CEO of the entire company. As CEO, Melissa has responsibility for the company’s day-to-day global operations and its long-term strategic growth. She also serves as a WEX board member.

Melissa is an active member of her community and was named The Girl Scouts of Maine’s 2013 Woman of Distinction, and a Mainebiz 2012 Woman to Watch. Recognized as an industry leader, Melissa was named the 2014 Most Innovative Woman in Payments and a PaymentSource 2014 Most Influential Woman in Payments. She serves on the Board of Directors for Maine Health and for the Dead River Company. She also participates in the Executive Women’s Forum, which she co-founded to provide a support network for female executives in her local community. Previously, Melissa served on the Center for Grieving Children’s Board of Directors.

Melissa began her career at Ernst & Young and earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Maine.

Shannon Kinney
Shannon is the Founder and Client Success Officer of Dream Local Digital, a digital marketing agency that has worked with thousands of small businesses across North America. She has over 25 years experience in the development of successful internet products, sales and marketing strategies and has worked on the team developing successful Internet Brands such as and, and over 60 online media properties for newspapers all over the U.S and Canada. Prior to that, she spent over 10 years in media sales and sales management in Maine. Shannon is considered an expert in the field of online marketing and social media and speaks regularly at conferences on the subject. She was recently named a Digital Innovator of the Year by Local Media Association.

Betsy has worked at the intersection of business strategy + information technology for the past twenty years, primarily as a founder or senior executive in innovative digital businesses. She has put in her ten thousand+ hours developing the practical leadership skills that have helped to launch multiple businesses, raise over $20 million in funding and create sustainable innovations for her partners and clients. She is currently the founder of 230Trees a strategic consultancy for technology companies seeking exponential growth.
